Agiorgitiko Red Wine - What Should You Know About?
Summer puts pictures of the calm sea and beautiful white houses built along the coast of the Greek islands in the mind. Now you can enjoy wines that remind you of the Greek islands right in your own home with a glass of fresh white or a full-bodied Agiorgitiko!
White wines of Greece have a color range of citrus notes such as Assyrtiko to the mineral character of Santorini produced from Athiri. Other famous Greek whites are Moschofilero, a rather lightly floral, pink-skinned grape grown all over the Peloponnese and Roditis, which is zesty lemon-and-lime sharp wine, best for quaffing. For a wine that is out of the ordinary, look for the Visanto white wine produced from 95% Vilana grapes that are cultivated in the volcanic environment of the island of Santorini. It offers a high mineral character along with some pear and apricot notes.
Some of the best white wines I have ever tasted are the Greek white wines online which are fresh, aromatic and ideal for Mediterranean food. The reds may dominate the scene, but the whites produced in the country are equally worthy of attention due to their food pairing abilities, quality, and history.
One of them is assyrtiko – a white variety that grows perfectly on the volcanic soils of Santorini. These vines are so strong that they grow in basket like forms and that is to compensate for the high winds. Assyrtiko yields a wine with citric/tart character, minerality and hints of salt – ideal for seafood. Other popular whites include moschofilero and roditis with intense aromas that can go from rose petal to peach. The Robola grape from Cephalonia is light and slightly floral and citrussy making it perfect as an aperitif wine.
The island of Santorini is also known for its dessert wine, Vinsanto, which is produced from sun-dried Assyrtiko and Athiri varieties. This amber colored nectar is sweet with fruit flavors, balanced by a vibrant acidity, making it an excellent finale to a Greek experience.
Agiorgitiko Red Wine |
The vast majority of Agiorgitiko red wine (ah-your-YEE-tee-koh) is produced in Nemea in the Peloponnese Peninsula. These rich but elegant reds are bursting with sweet red fruits like raspberry and black cherry, alongside herbal notes, pepper, and tobacco. Oak ageing imparts subtle notes of vanilla, cinnamon, and cloves. Agiorgitiko as a fine example will build up in a bottle and it will be best to consume it after 3-5 years.
